This graceful but understated long case or grandfather clock from about 1850 is signed by the makers, "A & W Marshall, Wisham," Scotland.

The mahogany case has luscious flame grain panels and a fine old finish with warm patina. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. There are numerous mars and shrinkage separations from age for antique character.

The brass movement runs for a week on a winding, and keeps excellent time, striking the hour on a bell. The hand painted dial is wonderful, with the four seasons and a scene of "The Blessing" at the top of the arch. Original painting includes subtle gold highlights, wear and some crazing from age.

Engraved brass hands appear original. Glass in the upper door is old and wavy, the key in the lower door is a handle only, the lock does not work, The winding crank is a modern replacement, one weight is later as well.

On the pendulum is a charming worn painting of a clipper ship. Wisham is on the edge of the Clyde River valley, 15 miles southwest of Glasgow. The settlement dates to the 12th Century, the modern town was laid out in 1794 and has grown t 28,000 inhabitants.

Measurements of this historic clock are 21" wide, 11" deep and 91" tall.
