🔍 Episode Overview:
At 8:37 p.m. on April 26, 2024, Officer Madison Cornielson from Athens-Clarke County Police headed to the Shell station at 175 Tallassee Road. A female had stolen a vape, reports said. He pulled up and talked to a store worker. The worker pointed to a woman in the driver's seat of a red 2023 Ford Escape. Her car was backing up fast. It almost hit another vehicle. Officer Cornielson told her to get out.

They ID'd her as Karen Carbonara. While chatting, he smelled booze on her breath. He spotted other signs she was drunk. The worker said no charges if she paid for the vape. Officer Cornielson walked her inside. She bought it. She wobbled in and out. A car search turned up an open wine bottle on the front passenger floor. Karen owned up to drinking it that day. He suspected she was impaired. So he asked for sobriety tests.

First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. No smooth eye tracking. Jerky nystagmus at max turn. It started before 45 degrees. No up-down shakes. Next was Walk and Turn. She couldn't follow directions. Tests stopped there.

The theft call, booze smell, open bottle, and bad tests added up. Officer Cornielson arrested her for DUI. Officer Surine helped with cuffs. She slipped them at first. He read Georgia's Implied Consent warning. She refused a breath test.

He put her in the patrol car. They drove to Clarke County Jail. She got booked. Summons hit her: DUI-Alcohol-Less Safe under 40-6-391(a)(1), and Obstruction of Officer under 16-10-24(1).
