#mybridgertonscore for Spitfire Audio's scoring competition 2022.

When composing this score, I borrowed heavily from the 18th-century galant style of composition to create a sense of the aristocratic world in which the series is set. While by no means confined to the upper echelons of society, the style was systematised, taught and developed primarily among composers for royal courts. It became immensely popular, some of its schemata (base patterns that were fleshed out) even clichéd, and endured in the longer term as an important part of the musical heritage of the first generation of Romantic composers.

It is a testament to the success of the galant style that the layman listener would likely make such associations even today. This, broadly speaking, is the fundamental mechanism by which successful film music operates; it capitalises, in degrees of subtlety, on our subconscious associations, without the need for technical explanation or understanding.

Those familiar with the Bridgerton series may know that it is set in the Regency era. If my score was strictly intended to be period music, the galant style, and the harpsichord for that matter, would be anachronistic. The sentiment which they expressed, however, was in my mind a more important consideration than historical accuracy.
