Some facts.
The minke whale, also known as the northern minke whale, Minke whale, or dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is a mammal of the order Cetacea, family Minke whales (Balaenopteridae). It is the smallest representative of minke whales and the second largest among all species of baleen whales (Mysticeti).

Description
The minke whale is the smallest of the minke whale family, and will grow to a maximum of 10.2 meters in length. Females are larger than males, sometimes reaching a mass of 10 tons. The color is dark on top with a white underbelly. The head is pointed like a bullet, with a relatively small rostrum. Whalebone consists of about 300 yellowish plates. There are 50-70 longitudinal folds on the belly of minke whales. The pectoral fins are light underneath and have a wide white stripe on the top. The tail is forked. The dorsal fin is high and curved back.

Area
The minke whale is distributed throughout the world and lives in all oceans and some open seas. Temperate regions are preferred over tropical regions.

Habitat
Although minke whales are not coastal inhabitants, these baleen whales rarely venture more than 169 km from the coast. They are also found in wide estuaries, bays, fjords and lagoons, and also swim into the polar ice further than other species of minke whales.

Nutrition
Minke whales mainly feed on krill and various small fish. There are regional differences in diet. The Antarctic population of minke whales eats exclusively krill, but in the northern hemisphere these whales are more omnivorous and can feed on squid, small fish such as cod, herring and sardines.

Behavior
Minke whales swim alone or in small groups of 2 to 4 individuals, although large aggregations (hundreds of individuals) are also found in areas where krill are abundant. This is a highly acrobatic species of whale, capable of leaping completely out of the water like dolphins. Minke whales are fast swimmers. Some populations migrate. Both the southern and northern populations often spend the winter in tropical waters, but at different times of the year, due to seasonal differences in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Lifespan
The average lifespan of a minke whale is 45-50 years.
