On July 14, 2023, India's third lunar mission, Chandrayaan 3, was successfully launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The mission is a follow-up to Chandrayaan 2, which successfully orbited the moon in 2019 but failed to soft-land on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan 3 consists of a lander, a rover, and an orbiter. The lander, named Vikram, will attempt to soft-land on the moon's south pole. The rover, named Pragyan, will then deploy from the lander and explore the lunar surface. The orbiter will continue to orbit the moon, collecting data and relaying communications between the lander and rover.

Scientists at ISRO chose south pole for Soft Landing of Chandrayaan 3 because South pole consists of Rocks, Soil and even water in Frozen state since due to lack of sunlight, it is frozen for millions of years which will tell the scientists about the true picture of solar system and evolution of life.

However, there are many challenges that the Lander will face while landing on south pole (as compared to the equator, because equator is smoother)-

1. Big and rugged rocky areas and terrains.
2. Huge craters
3. The temperatures are very cold, reaching as low as -230 degrees Celsius.

The Chandrayaan 3 mission is a significant step forward for India's space program. If successful, it will make India the fourth country to soft-land on the moon. The mission will also help scientists to better understand the moon's geology and history.
