A shooting board is an extremely useful tool for fine furniture making. When combined with a hand plane it makes short work of making the edge of a board square to the side of the board. You can even use it it to straighten the edge of small boards.

I built my version of Rob Cosman's shooting board that has a concave base. The idea of the concavity is that it flattens out as downward pressure is applied through the hand plane ensuring that the shooting board remains flat so that the plane does not wobble.
