🏀 The Australian School Championships remains the pinnacle national school-level basketball event in Australia. It’s organised by Basketball Australia (BA).
The 2025 edition — the 2025 Foot Locker Australian School Championships — runs from Sunday 30 November to Friday 5 December 2025.
It’s being held on the Gold Coast, using multiple venues within the Gold Coast Sports Precinct. These include: Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium, Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, and Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Stadium — all located in or near Carrara/Coomera.
According to BA, the 2025 event is “the biggest edition in the event’s history” — with 226 teams and over 2,700 athletes registered for the week.
The competition spans multiple age divisions: for example U20, U17 and U15 in 2025.
📈 How the scale compares to previous years
In 2024, the ASC attracted a record 216 teams at the Gold Coast.
By 2025 the event has grown further — 226 teams, 2,700+ athletes: a notable rise in participation.
The increasing scale reflects how the ASC has cemented itself as the premier school-level basketball event in Australia, with strong national representation and growing interest.
🌍 The 2025 ASC features the first ever participation by a US school: St Joseph’s Santa Maria High School (California) — marking a new milestone for the tournament.
The organisers say there are also teams from “everywhere” — including even overseas (New Zealand and America) joining this year.
The event is not just about games: the 2025 ASC opening and week-long tournament will feature large-scale atmosphere: multiple venues, food trucks, merchandise stands, partner activations, and a lively crowd.
🧑🏫 Real schools on the ground — recent examples (2025 & 2024)
Encounter Lutheran College announced in late November 2025 that it’s sending two teams: U20 Men and U17 Girls.
Westminster School (SA) will in 2025 participate in ASC for the first time, sending Senior A Boys.
In 2024, dozens of Queensland schools — more than 60 — participated in the ASC, indicating strong representation from QLD schools.
Additionally, associations outside the traditional “big-school” competitions continue to feed into ASC: school tournaments within states — e.g. via state championships run by member bodies — often act as pathways to ASC.
🎬 Rise of the Prawns
Ballina Coast High School is a powerful regional underdog, after being crowned NSW u15 State Champions in 2025. Ballina Coast High School has indeed participated in the ASC using Carrara as a venue, per their own school communications.
🧰 “This December, the biggest school-basketball tournament in Australia gets even bigger. 226 teams. Over 2,700 athletes. Schools from across Australia — and even as far as the USA — converging on the Gold Coast. This is the 2025 2025 Foot Locker Australian School Championships.”
