A 21-year-old Upper Peninsula man accused of not paying the Mackinac Bridge toll is now facing a slew of charges after he allegedly led a Mackinaw City police officer on a chase reaching speeds of 110 mph and damaged the officer’s cruiser.

The driver from Laurium in Houghton County was heading south when he went through the tolls without paying around 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Mackinaw City Police Department.

A Mackinaw City officer saw the driver on the other side of the bridge going above the 45-mph speed limit, according to the police department, and then exiting at the 338 off ramp.

The officer tried to pull over the driver, but the police department said the driver instead accelerated east on US-23.

The vehicle reached speeds up to 110 mph while traveling in different speed limit zones and even disregarding traffic control devices in a one lane construction zone, according to police.

The pursuit continued a couple of miles before the suspect vehicle pulled over and stopped. The officer ordered the suspect to turn the vehicle off but suspect then accelerated and made a U-Turn coming back towards the officer’s direction, according to police.

As the suspect was passing the officer’s vehicle, police said the suspect struck the front of the police car causing minor damage and the pursuit continued westbound on US-23.

After continuing back through the same one lane construction zone, the suspect pulled over and exited the vehicle.

The driver was taken into custody and lodged in the Cheboygan County Jail. No one was injured during the incident.

That driver is being charged with Flee & Elude 3rd Degree, Reckless Driving, MDOP to Police Vehicle, Fail to Pay Toll and Speeding.
