► In this informative video, we dive into the essential aspects of mammography that every nursing student needs to understand. As a critical tool in breast cancer screening, mammography plays a vital role in early detection and patient care. This video will guide you through the fundamentals of mammography, from understanding when and why it’s used to interpreting key findings on mammogram images.
We start by covering the basic principles of mammography, including the recommended screening schedules for different age groups and high-risk individuals. You'll learn about the specific indications for mammography, such as the presence of a palpable mass, breast pain, nipple discharge, and skin changes. The video also explains the standard views used during mammography—cranial caudal (CC) and medial lateral oblique (MLO)—and how these views help in visualizing different parts of the breast.
We then explore the anatomy of the breast as seen on a mammogram, including the differences between dense breast tissue in younger women and the more radiolucent tissue in older women. This understanding is crucial for identifying normal structures versus potential abnormalities.
Next, we discuss characteristic findings on a mammogram, such as benign cysts, calcifications, and the appearance of breast cancer. The video highlights the importance of distinguishing between benign and malignant findings and the role of additional imaging modalities like ultrasound, MRI, and CT in further evaluation.
Finally, the video outlines the steps taken after identifying an abnormal finding, including the use of needle or wire localization for biopsy or excision. By the end of this video, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to evaluate mammograms, explain the process to patients, and recognize the key features that indicate different breast conditions.
This video is an invaluable resource for nursing students looking to strengthen their knowledge of mammography and breast cancer screening, helping you to better support your future patients through informed and compassionate care.
