A general overview of the Book of Deuteronomy is organized as a series of addresses given by Moses to the people of Israel in the land of Moab, just prior to them entering into the promised land of Canaan for conquest.

Some of the most important matters recorded in the book are as follows:

1) Moses reminds the people of the great miracles God had performed for them over the past forty years. He urges them to remember how God had lead and taken care of them while they traveled through the wilderness, and because of this, they should remain obedient and loyal to Him.

2) Moses reviews the Ten Commandments with the people, and emphasizes the importance of the First Commandment, calling the people to remain devoted to the Lord alone, because He is the only true and living God. Afterwards he reviews the various supplemental laws given by God, that are to govern Israel's life and society in the promised land. The term Deuteronomy means a second giving of the law.

3) Moses reminds the people of the meaning and significance of the covenant God had made with them, and urges them to renew their commitment and obedience to this covenant and it's corresponding conditions.

4) Moses commissions Joshua as the next leader of God's people, and after singing a song celebrating God's faithfulness, and pronouncing a blessing on the tribes of Israel, Moses dies in Moab, east of the Jordan River, because God does not allow him to enter into the promised land of Canaan.

The great theme of the book is that God has saved and blessed his chosen people, whom He loves; so his people are to remember this, and love and obey Him, so that they may have life and continued blessing. If not they would have death and continued curses. The key verse of the book is what Jesus Christ Himself called the greatest commandment of all, known in Hebrew as the Shema:

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
