Andy Warhol may have pioneered Pop Art, but he also loved cats like the rest of us.

Years before he was famous and decades before Internet cat memes, Warhol created an art book called 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy.

That’s right - 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy. The typo was left in the title… because that’s the sort of thing Warhol did.

In the early 1950s, Warhol was in New York scraping through life as a freelance illustrator. Money was tight. Back home in Pittsburgh, his mom, Julia, heard about his struggles and came to help.

Since they had an apartment full of cats, it’s easy to imagine where they found inspiration. Warhol’s collection of felines started with a cat called Hester but Andy worried Hester would be lonely. Sam arrived and, in no time, there was a colony of 25 cats in the apartment.

In 1954, Warhol and Julia self published 25 Cats Name Sam, which is filled with hand colored lithographs of cats by Andy and calligraphy by Julia.

There are actually only 16 cats called Sam in the book.

Original editions are almost impossible to find but a small number of copies from a 1987 reprint are available.

Warhol and his mother went on to publish a second cat book, called Holy Cats, which tells of Hester’s adventures in heaven. Original copies are priced between $3,000 and $5,000 but again there is a much cheaper reprint from the 1980s.

And that’s how one of the greatest names in art got his start… cat pictures.
