Good Charlotte - Derek Grant Performance Reel (2004-2005)

A montage of clips from my time filling in on drums for Good Charlotte.

Some backstory:
Alkaline Trio was between albums when I got the call from Good Charlottes tour manager Mark Holloway in September 2004. He asked if I could fly to Sweden in three days to play a show and finish the promotional tour the band was on. I knew nothing about the band, but had been friends with Mark for a few years and trusted his judgment. He overnighted me a CD of the songs which I learned during the flight. I don't even think we got to soundcheck that first day so I hadn't physically played a note of their music before we were on stage that night. Slightly daunting, but I had learned a lot about improvising and flying by the seat of my pants from working with the Vandals. I only met the band that evening at dinner during which Benji asked if I liked vampires and suggested we get matching vampire bite tattoos on our neck!! Astounding & amazing. The show went great as did the rest of the run. Shortly after I returned the Trio started recording Crimson - A few months later I again got a call from Good Charlotte who asked if I could do the first leg of their US tour while their new fill-in drummer learned the songs and got up to speed. It just so happened that Matt had broken some bones skateboarding which delayed plans for Alkaline Trio, so I had time to help Good Charlotte out again. All in all it was a great experience, I really liked the guys in the band, and they were all insanely talented. It was also on those tours that I met Josh Stern who was their videographer at the time - we became great friends and eventually, the Trio adopted him as part of the family and he toured with us for many years. Rest in peace little buddy!
