Falcon 9 had come to symbolize perfect precision, an almost unstoppable force in the satellite launch business. But then, one recent Starlink mission changed everything. During the flight, Falcon 9’s second stage suffered a serious anomaly, forcing SpaceX to immediately ground the entire rocket fleet. And that decision directly affected Dragon Crew-12, a mission that was scheduled to launch in just a few days.
So what exactly went wrong with Falcon 9? And more importantly, will Crew-12 still fly on schedule?

Falcon 9 has long been regarded as one of the most reliable rockets ever built.
As of the time you’re watching this video, SpaceX has carried out nearly 610 launches, with an overall mission success rate of about 99.5 percent across earlier Falcon 9 variants. The current Block 5 version performs even better, pushing close to a 99.8 percent success rate across hundreds of consecutive flights.
No other rocket on Earth flies at this kind of cadence, almost weekly, sometimes just days apart, while maintaining that level of consistency and reliability.

But even the most dependable machines can reveal a weak point. And that’s exactly what happened just two days ago, on February 2, 2026.
A Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 10:47 a.m. Eastern Time, carrying 25 Starlink v2 Mini Optimized satellites. For most of the mission, everything looked like a textbook. The first stage separated and landed on the droneship as usual. The upper stage executed two smooth burns of its Merlin Vacuum engine, delivered the payload to the intended low Earth orbit, and deployed the satellites right on schedule, just 62 minutes after liftoff.
The payload was safe. By most definitions, the mission itself was a success. But the real problem surfaced roughly nine hours later, as the upper stage prepared for its final task- the deorbit burn.
