On the evening of the 17 July 1994, the world tuned in to the World Cup final between Italy and Brazil in the Rose Bowl.

Earlier that day, Down had also won the Ulster Championship.

In a rural pub in Annaclone, Co. Down, a crowd of 40 people had gathered to celebrate and tune in to USA '94.

The pub owner, John Loy, had an uneasy feeling, and decided to close the bar's doors a bit earlier than usual. As it turned out, that action ended up sparing the lives of everybody inside.
