We've made our decision whether or not to move to Turkey (Türkiye). In this video we will announce our decision and explain the process we went through to determine whether or not Turkey is the right country for us.

When we first came to Turkey and decided we wanted to stay long term, we were planning to rent an apartment and get a one year tourist visa. We had done our research about this and thought it would be pretty easy to get this type of permit.

Then we read the news that the immigration rules were changing. The tourist visa would now only be good for 6 months instead of one year, and there were several new requirements to get this visa. And over the next few weeks we read stories on Facebook about people being denied this visa even though they met the new requirements.

At this point we considered the idea of getting our residency permit through the property ownership category instead of the tourism category. We saw that property prices were reasonable. So we worked with a real estate agent to find a nice apartment that we ended up purchasing.

Once the purchase was complete we began the process of applying for our residency permit. We gathered all the necessary paperwork to meet the requirements. It turns out once we had all of this paperwork and took it to our appointment at the immigration office, there was a whole new set of paperwork that we needed to get from various government offices around the city. But we got it all done.

Two other frustrations in getting our residency permit were: 1) Dealing with the language barrier. Google Translate was a very frustrating way to take care of official government business. 2) Dealing with the state of Florida to try to get an apostille copy of our marriage certificate (required for the residency permit in Türkiye). We had heard about the bureaucracy and incompetency in Türkiye. Florida is worse.

Just a few weeks after we purchased our apartment the government announced that the rules to get a residency permit through property ownership were changing. Now a minimum purchase price is US$75,000 to qualify for the permit. It's a good thing that our purchase completed before this new rule because the price we paid for our apartment doesn't even come close to meeting these new requirements. In addition to the minimum value, many restrictions were put into place as to which neighborhoods qualify. Foreigners are now banned from purchasing property in certain areas.
