German Chancellor Friedrich Merz along with his defence and foreign minister and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte marked the 70th anniversary of Germany joining NATO during a ceremony in Berlin. Merz addressed the event saying the celebrations came after a "historic NATO summit" in The Hague. Rutte thanked Germany for increasing its defence spending and production, saying "this is exactly what we need."Germany joined NATO in 1955, laying the foundation for its rearmament after World War Two and the creation of the German army in its current form.
