What you need:
• Glass Jar
• Water
• Spoon
• Coin

What you do:
Step 1: Remove the lid from the jar. Flip the jar upside down and place the open end over the coin.
Step 2: Spoon water over the jar’s base to create a round, curved puddle on top. The more round the water is the better.
Step 3: Look down through the water and see the magnified coin!

What's going on?
Water can act like a magnifying glass! Light travels through the air very quickly. It slows down a bit when it travels through denser
material, like water. This decrease in speed causes the light to bend. This is called refraction. Lenses are clear objects that bend
light to make images look bigger or smaller. The water in this experiment acts like a lens because it is curved. The more curved a lens is, the more light bends towards your eye. This bending makes the light look like it is coming from a larger object. This is
called magnification.

Try using your homemade magnifier to magnify different objects, such as leaves, seeds, or insects. What do you observe? Can you
change the amount of water to make the magnification stronger?
