Amtrak Train 5, running 8 minutes late out of Grand Junction, is joined at Mack Siding on the very western end of Colorado at milepost RG470 on Union Pacific's Green River Subdivision. We cruise along the edge of Colorado's Western Slope, enter Ruby Tunnel at 03:10, and into the last spectacular canyon westbound along the Colorado River in the Centennial State, Ruby Canyon. At 03:55, we hit Ruby Siding (RG472) and pass an eastbound loaded UP Coal Drag. The scenery does not let down as we make our way winding through the beautiful Colorado River canyon. We hit our next siding at 10:05, Shale Siding (RG477) and the last 5 miles of the westbound California Zephyr's journey in Colorful Colorado. The views continue to impress out the rear of "The Most Talked About Train In America" and with sights like these we can guess as to how the Zephyr got that nickname over the decades.

As the train makes a dash for the Utah border, we approach Utaline Siding (RG482) at 16:00 and on the siding's other end we will have officially entered the Beehive State where the scenery will undoubtedly continue to impress as the train charges through the unincorporated community of Westwater. We then hit the Westwater Siding (RG487) at 20:25 and will soon bid farewell to the Colorado River after riding along the scenic river since Granby earlier this afternoon. The train will make its next station stop at Green River where it will then bid another farewell this time to Interstate 70 which it has followed along since Dotsero. At Green River, the train will then turn northwest as it'll make its way towards Provo and the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area. It'll be a spectacular sight for sure, as the train will continue on through the Utah sunset. Video 04/21/2025.
