Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar was the Maratha Queen of Malwa, known for her Wisdom and Administrative skills. Honoured by the title Punyashlok, Ahilya Bai had a humble beginning in a small village, Chondi near the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Women did not go to school during that time, but her father himself educated her. The Maharaja of Malwa, Malhar Rao Holkar got Ahilya Bai married to his son, Khanderao Holkar, at the age of eight, in 1733. In the year 1754, Ahilya Bai husband got killed during the Battle of Kumher. Grief stricken, it is said that Ahilyabai wanted to sacrifice herself by committing sati. But it was her father-in-law, Malhar Rao, who dissuaded her against it and instead, trained her in administrative and military matters. After the deaths of her father-in-law in 1766 and her son, Malerao, the very next year, Ahilyabai petitioned the Peshwa to allow her to take over the reign of Malwa. Though some of the nobles objected to this, she had full support of the Holkar army.

Under the rule of Ahilya Bai Holkar, Malwa remained an oasis of stability and peace. Ahilyabai was a great pioneer and builder of Hindu temples and built hundreds of temples and Dharmashalas throughout India. Her greatest achievement was to rebuild one of the holiest Hindu temple, i.e. the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the city of Varanasi. A woman of modern times, Ahilyabai's rule is remembered as a golden age in history of India. Ahilyabai was succeeded by her commander-in-chief and nephew, Tukoji Rao Holkar. Annie Besant wrote, "Ahilyabai Holkar was seventy years old when her long and splendid life closed. Indore long mourned its noble Queen, happy had been her reign, and her memory is cherished with deep reverence unto this day." Her story is an inspiration for all.

यह कहानी है पुण्यश्लोक अहिल्याबाई होलकर की, जो मालवा साम्राज्य की रानी थीं। वे अपने ज्ञान और प्रशासनिक कौशल के लिए जानी जाती हैं। अहिल्याबाई का जन्म महाराष्ट्र के अहमदनगर जिले के पास एक छोटे से गाँव, चोंडी में हुआ। उस समय महिलाएं स्कूल नहीं जाती थीं, लेकिन उनके पिता ने उन्हे खुद घर पर ही शिक्षित किया। मालवा के महाराज, मल्हार राव होलकर ने 1733 में आठ साल की उम्र में अहिल्याबाई की शादी अपने बेटे खांडेराव से करवा दी। वर्ष 1754 में, कुम्हेर की लड़ाई के दौरान अहिल्याबाई होलकर के पति की मृत्यु हो गई। दुख से त्रस्त, ऐसा कहा जाता है कि अहिल्याबाई सती करके अपना बलिदान देना चाहती थीं। लेकिन यह उनके ससुर मल्हार राव थे, उन्हे ऐसा करने से रोक दिया और इसके बजाय, उन्हें प्रशासनिक और सैन्य मामलों में प्रशिक्षित किया। 1766 में अपने ससुर और उसके बेटे, मलेराव की मृत्यु के बाद, अगले ही वर्ष, अहिल्याबाई होलकर ने पेशवा को मालवा के शासन को संभालने की अनुमति देने के लिए याचिका दायर की। हालाँकि एक तबका इसके विरोध में था, लेकिन उन्हें होलकर सेना का पूरा समर्थन था। अहिल्याबाई होलकर के शासन में, मालवा में स्थिरता और शांति बनी रही । उनकी सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि 1777 से 1780 के बीच उनके द्वारा कराया गया काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण है, जो भगवान शिव को समर्पित है, और हिन्दू धर्म के सबसे पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में से एक है। अहिल्याबाई के निधन के बाद महाराजा तुकोजी राव ने राज्य की शासन व्यवस्था को संभाला।
