Ensure access to water and sanitation for all

Water is essential for health, poverty reduction, food security, peace, human rights, ecosystems, and education. Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is a fundamental human need for health and well-being. However, billions of people will still lack access to these basic services by 2030 unless progress increases fourfold.

The demand for water is rising due to rapid population growth, urbanization, and increasing needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors. Currently, half the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity at least one month a year, and this is projected to worsen with climate change.

Investing in infrastructure, sanitation facilities, protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems, and hygiene education is crucial to ensuring universal access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030. Improving water-use efficiency is also key to reducing water stress.

There has been positive progress: from 2015 to 2022, the proportion of the world’s population with access to safely managed drinking water increased from 69% to 73%. By managing our water resources sustainably, we can better manage food and energy production, support decent work and economic growth, preserve water ecosystems, and combat climate change.

We as Civil society organizations play a vital role in holding governments accountable, investing in water research and development, and promoting the inclusion of women, youth, and indigenous communities in water resources governance. Generating awareness and turning it into action will lead to win-win results, enhancing sustainability and integrity for both human and ecological systems.
