Hola :) I am learning so much from analyzing film scenes, studying how the writer’s words translate into visual storytelling. In this scene from the Academy Award winning movie “No Country for Old Men,” Chigurh bets a man’s life on a coin toss. It’s a remarkable scene for various reasons, including how efficient subtext is used. I will say, when I first saw the movie, I found this scene so boring. Nothing happens, and it’s not until you reach the end of the movie, where you see the coin toss result in something much more sinister, that I valued the significance of this scene. I didn’t catch it the first time, but then it makes sense: the proprietor noticed the license plate, and unbeknownst to him, it was from a stolen car that linked Chigurh to the other murders. Chigurh wanted to kill the proprietor because now he’s a witness. But in his warped psychopathic mind, he places the man’s fate on the result of a coin toss. He makes it significant because that’s the crazy and illogical way that makes sense for him. And it makes him all the more creepy.

The movie is pretty faithful to this version of the script. It’s a long scene (over 4 minutes long), and actually not much is different from the screenplay. There are minor changes within the dialogue, and one small exchange is missing in the final cut, but otherwise, it pretty much plays out the same way. One other minor change that isn’t that significant but I think the movie did better is that the coin is tossed on the counter instead of on his arm like in the script. In the script, he then just hands the quarter to the proprietor, but in the movie, it’s tossed, and that makes the proprietor a bit more nervous, adding another small moment of tension in the scene.
