'Jhaadu Mhaaro Phiri Rahyo' sings Kaluram Bamaniya

Описание к видео 'Jhaadu Mhaaro Phiri Rahyo' sings Kaluram Bamaniya

In this song by the poet Maatram ji, the humble 'jhadu' (broom) takes on mystical qualities and becomes symbolic of the cleansing force that sweeps away our doubts and dualities to brings us closer to our attention. In a society that still considers sweeping an undignified job, this emphatic celebration of the act takes on an even greater significance.

Kaluram Bamaniya belongs to a vibrant tradition of singing bhakti poets such as Kabir, Gorakhnath, Bananath and Meera in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh in India. He started learning at the early age of 9, by accompanying his father, grandfather and uncle on the manjiras. When he was 13 years old he ran away from home and went to Rajasthan, where he absorbed a wide repertoire of songs from an itinerant Mirasi singer Ram Niwas Rao for 1-2 years.
