The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II. Why did Japan attack us? The Japanese were angry over an oil embargo imposed by the U.S. after they had invaded Manchuria. In the attack over 2,300 men were killed and almost 1,200 were wounded, the U.S.S. Arizona was one of 18 ships that were destroyed, with many more sustaining various amounts of damage. The Japanese crippled our fleet in the attack and took advantage of our defeat to expand their Pacific empire. Admiral Yamamoto famously shared his fear that Japan had awakened a sleeping giant, which of course they had. FDR famously addresses the nation the following day, giving his 'Day of Infamy' speech. Franklin Roosevelt announced to the nation that the U.S. was at war, and the American people rose to the challenge, joining the military, rebuilding our navy, mass producing the weapons necessary for war, and in the process...ending the Great Depression.
