Vernár (Hungarian: Vernár, German: Wernsdorf, Rusyn: Вернар) is a village and large municipality in Poprad District in the Prešov Region of northern Slovakia. It lies between Low Tatras and Slovenský raj mountain ranges. It is Slovakia's western-most municipality with Orthodox plurality.
The village was mentioned in the historical records for the first time in 1295. Before the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, Vernár was part of Gömör and Kishont County within the Kingdom of Hungary. From 1939 to 1945, it was part of the Slovak Republic. On 28 January 1945, the Red Army entered Vernár and it was once again part of Czechoslovakia.
The municipality lies at an altitude of 765 meters and covers an area of 52.901 km². It has a population of about 600 people.
There is a football club, chess club and a ski-lift area in the village. Cultural sightseeings are a classical Greek Catholic church from the 19th century and a preserved folk architecture.
The distinctive mountain village of Vernár, located in the valley of the Vernár stream on the border of two national parks, the Slovak Paradise and the Low Tatras. Within these national parks, Vernár has a special status. It is part of them and contributes an important part to the wonderful nature they offer. In the cadastre of the village itself, there is beautiful nature with a lot of interesting natural phenomena, but also locations with irreplaceable scientific importance.
The suitability of the natural conditions of the Vernár cadastral territory was decided by people in the past. Undoubtedly, they were attracted by the wild nature, forest wealth and the Vernár stream.
The legend of the origin of Vernár tells about three brothers who were driven away from their own tribe. Here, too, nature helped. They wandered the countryside looking for the highest peak in the area. It was the King's club. Here they split up and each went down to a different valley. This is how the villages of Šumiac, Telgárt and Vernár were created, which are still similar in their customs and traditions.
The valley of the Vernár stream did not provide fertile soil, which was an important prerequisite for the settlement of any area in the past. Rather, the wealth of the forest attracted people in ancient times, who settled here and began to cultivate the landscape. The people who lived here in the past were creators and bearers of traditions for centuries. The gradual changes in Slovakia also affected the Vernár valley. People's lives have changed beyond recognition. The standard of living increased, the way of living changed and this almost caused the disappearance of folk architecture. People's cultural needs, activities or interests have changed. Despite this, some traditions and customs have remained relatively permanent, but they are undoubtedly adapting to the conditions of modern times.
The first written mention of Vernár is from 1295, and it talks about the foundation of the village based on German purchase law. The founder of the village was Verner, the son of Ján (Hans) from Žakovce, whom the Görgey family entrusted on the basis of the so-called of the "Solta Agreement" to build a settlement. At the same time, the first settlers were allowed to build houses, clear the territory and fertilize it.
The village was, like others in the territory of Spiš, based on the right of purchase. In records it is mentioned as Villa Verneri, Wernar, Vernár. The contract document, confirmed with a seal, was officially issued by Count Bald of Spiš. It is clear from the above that the municipality, at that time, or the forest in which the village was officially founded belonged to Spiš. In that period, the small settlement of Falkstein, today's name Falštín, was founded east of the village. A monastery stood there. It is very likely that the monastery was on the current site of the Hranovnické pleso outdoor school, which is in contact with Falštín. There is a spring with warm water and there was a hunting castle of Coburga (Bulgarian king), which owned many surrounding forests, as far as Horehroní and Muráňská plain, standing there in the 1960s.
The first of the realized hiking trails under the leadership of the Civic Association of Vernár activities - OZVA is the "Educational Trail Slovak Paradise - Low Tatras". This hiking trail involved the recategorization of the original hiking trail into an educational trail and the addition of information panels, the creation of a rest area, and clearing and cleaning of the trail.
