Estonian PM Kallas warns EU that military use may be needed in the Ukraine crisis

U Parliamentary President Roberta Metsola greeted the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja #Kallas by highlighting the changing role of the EU “Europe’s role needs to be reassessed in the face of the serious threat which it is facing.

This will include reducing dependencies on the Kremlin and boosting our security and military co-operation” said Metsola. She added that the Eu will ensure that democracy will prevail and that it will support Ukraine and stand with it. #Estonia recalled Metsola, shares some 300km of borders with #Russia.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas gave an overview of the dire situation in Ukraine, particularly in the flow of refugees out of Ukraine. “The aim of Putin is to terrorise populations, we have seen it in Grozny and other places and now it is taking place in Mariupol and Kyiv,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. Global internet, she emphasized must be protected and the actions which are being taken are not against the Russian people but against Putin and his cronies.

The nimble response needs to be consolidated

Censorship, rationing, asking teachers to report on the political sympathies of the students are but a few of the abuses of power which Putin is wielding said, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. She added that the invasion of Ukraine has ushered in a sense of insecurity that has not been experienced since 1939. Kallas said that the free world has already begun to respond and the EU has shown a nimbleness in response which was exceptional. This she said surprised Putin as well as the world. “We have reacted as a geo-political union” observed Kallas.


Referring to the plight of the refugees, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said that “we are in this for the long haul” adding that support to Ukraine must be structured and sustained. To this end, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas proposed that the crisp response given by the EU in the past weeks needs to be consolidated and built upon.

“This will be a success for the rule of law,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas adding that support must also extend to the European Court of Justice. The Estonian PN said that the dependence on Russian energy must decrease and the EU energy grid must be synchronized.

Turning to the defence and security of the EU, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said that the EU needs to bolster these two aspects. The 2% of the GDP allowance, said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, must be the absolute minimum and defence must be emphatically strengthened in conjunction with NATO.

The defence spending must be done wisely Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and must be mobile and technologically innovative. “Sometimes the best way to achieve peace is through the willingness to use military methods,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. “Ukraine is not fighting for Ukraine but for Europe, so if not now, when?” concluded Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

We have done a lot, said the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell but it is not enough and we should have been quicker

. Replying to the speech made in the European Parliament by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, he said that the challenges the EU is facing are huge and the consequences of this war in Ukraine will be huge and will shape political decisions for the decades to come.

He added that a fragmentation of the European economy and the weaponization of dependency will no longer remain theoretical. He explained that weaponization of dependency meant the use of services such as the provision of oil or gas or food as weapons of war.

“When Russia bombed Kyiv, I felt the page of history turning,” said Borrell. The fact that the EU does not like war does not mean it should not think of war said, Borrell. Putin, he said in a trilingual speech, underestimated the response of Europe and this war will not be over quickly.
