China-U.S. relations are being put to the test with tensions over both trade and security. But the current dispute seems small compared to the difficulties in establishing bilateral ties back in 1979. That tremendous occasion would have never be possible without instrumental politicians from both sides. One of them is Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was the national security adviser to the then U.S. President Jimmy Carter. For decades, the man who worked to establish normal relations between China and the U.S. witnessed the ups and downs of the complex ties. I recently sat down with his son, Mark Brzezinski, former U.S. ambassador to Sweden, as he recalled his father's legacy. Just as his father, Brzezinski said he remained confident that despite the current impasse, the two nations have more in common than what divides them.
