The concept of ecological pyramid was devised by British ecologist Charles Elton in 1927.
 The trophic level in an ecosystem may be defined as a position occupied by a living organism in a food chain.
 The relationship among the successive trophic levels of a food chain in terms of their number, biomass and energy content may be represented by means of graphic diagram and this graphical representation is called ecological pyramids or food pyramids.
