The Dred Scott v. Sandford decision (1857) was a landmark—and highly controversial—U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The Court, led by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, held that:
1. African Americans, whether enslaved or free, were not U.S. citizens and therefore had no right to sue in federal court.
2. Dred Scott remained enslaved, despite having lived in free territories, because living in a free state did not grant freedom.
3. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was unconstitutional, as Congress had no authority to prohibit slavery in U.S. territories.

The ruling effectively expanded slavery’s legal reach, enraged abolitionists, and accelerated tensions leading to the Civil War. It is widely regarded as one of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history.
