The Cité de l'Espace is a science theme park, oriented towards space, astronomy and space conquest. Located in Toulouse, the Cité de l'Espace was inaugurated in June 1997. It was built on the initiative of the Municipality of Toulouse with the participation of numerous partners, such as, among others, the Regional Council of the Midi-Pyrénées, the French Ministries of Ecology, Transport, Defense, National Education, Research and Technology, the Center national d'études spatiales (CNES), Météo-France, the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) and the subsidiary EADS Astrium. During the first 13 years of its existence, the Cité was visited by around 4 million visitors. Its originality consists in having been conceived as a theme park so that young and old can learn while having fun. The park allows you to discover the life-size replica of the Ariane 5 rocket (53 meters high), the Soyuz spacecraft and the European Remote-Sensing Satellite (ERS) earth observation satellite. You can also visit an engineering model of the Mir space station, complete with all equipment. The Cité de l'Espace is also equipped with numerous exhibits, often interactive: so the control room allows you to prepare for the launch of a rocket, to witness its take-off, its flight and then the launch of an artificial satellite. The Terràdome (a terrestrial hemisphere of 25 m in diameter) presents the history of the Universe from the Big Bang to the formation of the solar system. The Astralia space, opened in 2005, offers two shows a day: a 280-seat planetarium, equipped with a 600 m² hemispherical screen, shows, among other things, a journey through the Universe to discover extraterrestrial life forms; an IMAX cinema with 300 seats, is currently showing the Hubble 3D film, a documentary in stereoscopy made with digital images and sequences filmed in space and on Earth, which tell the stages of the life of the Hubble Space Telescope and the space repair mission of the Space Shuttle, showing what the orbiting telescope made it possible to discover. Previously, the film Space Station 3D was shown in the IMAX room, shot in space and focusing on the start of construction of the International Space Station. For the youngest, the film Le chasseur dans le ciel (Hunters in the sky) is shown inside the Stellarium, a 140-seat planetarium. In total there are more than 250 exhibits, workshops and objects. The Cité de l'Espace also has several conference rooms.
