History from The Archives Episode 5: The Early History of the Sto. Niño de Cebu

Описание к видео History from The Archives Episode 5: The Early History of the Sto. Niño de Cebu

This April, the Philippines will be celebrating the 500th year of the introduction of Christianity in the Philippines. And one religious icon closely tied to this celebration is the Santo Nino, believed to be the only surviving relic of this historic event. Although widely popular not only to Catholics but to most Filipinos regardless of their religious affiliation, its history however has not been adequately established by reliable historical documentations. Aided by the rich archival and bibliographic collections from the Archivo de los Padres Agustinos de Filipinas in the Augustinian convent in Valladolid, Spain, this 5th episode of the History from the Archives will provide a brief discussion on its origins, its introduction to the natives by the Magellan expedition and its survival of 44 years of hiatus of Christianity in the Philippines until found by the crew of the Legazpi-Urdaneta Expedition.
