𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀?
The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs present in all vertebrates. They remove waste products from the body, maintain balanced electrolyte levels, and regulate blood pressure.

𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀:
-- Regulate electrolyte (salt) concentrations
-- Regulate the amount of fluid within the body
-- Help regulate blood pressure
-- Help maintain acid-base balance
-- Produce hormones that affect blood and bones
-- A kidney is composed of tiny units called nephrons
-- Nephrons consist of glomeruli and tubules
-- Glomeruli are small blood vessels that filter wastes and excess fluids
-- Tubules collect the waste to form urine

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆?
If your kidneys stop working completely, your body fills with extra water and waste products. This condition is called uremia. As a result, your hands or feet may swell. In addition, you will feel tired and weak because your body needs clean blood to function properly.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀?
Each of your kidneys comprises about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron includes a filter called the glomerulus and a tubule. The nephrons work through a two-step process: the glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to your blood and removes wastes.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗚𝗙𝗥 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧?
Healthcare providers use the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to determine if you have kidney disease and, if so, at what stage. eGFR measures your kidneys' ability to filter toxins or waste from your blood.

𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲:
-- A reduced amount of urine
-- Swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from retention of fluids caused by the failure of the kidneys to eliminate water waste
-- Unexplained shortness of breath
-- Excessive drowsiness or fatigue
-- Persistent nausea
-- Confusion
-- Pain or pressure in your chest

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻?
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone produced predominantly by specialised cells called interstitial cells in the kidney. Once it is made, it acts on red blood cells to protect them against destruction. At the same time, it stimulates stem cells of the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells.
