Family seeks wedding venue refund after groom dies before getting married

A Utah family says they are battling with a Midvale wedding venue over a refund after the groom died before getting married.

“They got engaged in March of 2021,” said Virginia Cervantes, talking about her daughter Daisy, and Kevin, the man she was supposed to marry. “So it’s been a long road trying to plan this. It’s been very stressful as a mom. I’ve never planned a wedding.

The family says Kevin died earlier this month by suicide, just two weeks before the wedding was to take place.

“I’ve already seen her try on her wedding dress,” said Cervantes. “I pictured her walking down an aisle and everything just crumbled and fell apart.”

Cervantes says on top of the unimaginable personal grief, they also had to go through the complicated process of ‘unplanning’ a wedding. Family members and friends started contacting all vendors and suppliers to explain what had happened.

“Everyone reimbursed us except for the venue,” said Cervantes, explaining they received either full or partial refunds. Cervantes says the wedding venue, Woodhaven Pointe, wouldn’t give a cash refund.

“Their policy is very clear,” said Cervantes. “On the contract it says no refunds unless it’s in 90 days. We didn’t have 90 days notice.”
