You are from France and you are in the Norman city of Falaise in 1386. A well-known murder trial of a person sick enough to kill a child is coming to an end. As you sit in court, the judge gives the sentence: "The defendant is to hang." What's the matter? This person is a pig.

People used to think that the death sentence was just a normal part of life, but this isn't an absurdist movie; it's a real trial that shows how complicated and sometimes even weird it has been to carry it out. People are morbidly interested in death, especially when it's done in public. This is why the death penalty has a lot of rules and traditions that don't make sense to people in the West today.

Still, think back to Chesterton's Fence: if something has been done for a long time, it's probably because of a good reason. Also, the sometimes confusing rules about the death penalty made sense in their political and social settings—sometimes they were useful, and sometimes they were just a ritual—even though they may seem disgusting now. The only thing they had in common was that they were generally very violent.
