The ultimate roadblock to Mongol conquest of China was the twin fortress cities of Xiangyang and Fancheng. For five long years starting in 1267, Kublai Khan’s forces were stuck. Drawing on knowledge from their Middle Eastern campaigns, he summoned Persian engineers Ismail and Ala al-Din, who introduced massive counterweight trebuchets.
Known as hui hui pow or Muslim trebuchets by the Chinese, these machines hurled stones weighing hundreds of pounds with devastating accuracy. Their giant projectiles smashed towers and walls, terrifying defenders. After a short, intense bombardment, Fancheng fell. In 1273, Xiangyang surrendered, opening the door to the fall of the Song Dynasty.
