Hail Proof Shingle – OC WeatherGuard HP

Today we’ll be going over the hail proof shingle by Owens Corning, the WeatherGuard HP roofing shingle. We’re replacing a roof in Rogers Ranch in San Antonio Texas. We’re removing a CertainTeed Laminated Architectural shingle, it’s at the end of its life expectancy, it was damaged by hail in a 2021 storm.

WeatherGuard HP Shingle – Class 4 – Hail Proof.

We’re replacing this roof with the Owens Corning WeatherGuard HP shingle. This roofing product is rated to be Hail Proof Shingle by UL.

What’s UL? UL provides the high level of expertise, insights and services necessary to solve critical business challenges. They help customers and companies achieve their safety, security and sustainability goals, meet quality and performance expectations, manage risk and achieve regulatory compliance.

For this product, they developed what’s known as the “steel ball test” (UL 2218). Based on the results of this test, UL assigns one of four ratings to a shingle, with Class 4 being the highest possible rating. In another post we’ll dive more into class 4 shingles and how they’re tested.

Are Hail Proof Shingles Worth It?

It depends what the goals for the property are. Let me explain, if you’re a homeowners and plan on living in the home for more than 10- 15 years, a class 4 product may be for you. If you’re a real estate investor and plan to hold the property for 3 – 5 years, this may not be the product for you. The price difference between a standard 3 tab builder grade and a class 4 impact rated shingles is almost double in material cost. This is why knowing your exit strategy on the property is important.

Most Insurance Companies Give A Discount When Installing A Class 4 Shingle.

Class 4 Hail Proof Shingles are loved my insurance carriers. Why?, because when you have an impact rated shingle, the roof will weather most storms and you as the property owner will file less claims. This saves you more money by not paying deductibles and the insurance company saves by not paying out. This is why they give a premium reduction ( a discount ) when installing a class 4 product.
