The city of Seattle is proposing an eight-year, $1.35 billion property tax levy in what would be the biggest financial request of voters of all time.

The simply titled “Transportation Levy Proposal” would replace and extend the expiring “Move Seattle” levy. Approved by voters in 2015, the Move Seattle levy was for nine years and $930 million.

In a briefing with reporters Thursday, Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) leaders said the owner of a median home in Seattle, at $866,000, would end up seeing their monthly property tax rate rise from $24 to $36, which is 50%. The SDOT said the proposal would increase the monthly cost of a $1 million home by $14 a month, and by $7 per month for a $500,000 home.

The Move Seattle levy replaced the “Bridging the Gap” levy, which was approved by voters in 2006 at $365 million for nine years.
