Hi. My name is Dan, and I am a railfan based mainly on Pan Am Railways’ Districts 2 and 3. Late in the week following Daylight Savings in late 2018, I got a heads-up that 28N was out in western New York with NS 8105 (ES44AC) “Interstate Heritage Unit” leading a NS SD60E. From this point forward, plans slowly formulated to catch the train on District 3. Finally after the first two days of an awesome long weekend of railfanning, 28N was set to arrive in Ayer, MA bright and early on the morning of November 12, 2018. After waking up, I would immediately check sources to see that 28N was around the Gardner area performing their setoff. Before I knew it, another post surfaced stating that 28N was coming through Fitchburg on the final leg of their journey to Ayer. As quick as we could, I gathered both my camera equipment and the stuff I needed for an upcoming high school football game and was out the door. We hurried over to Groton Harvard RD in Ayer, just in time to hear 8105’s horn blowing for crossings in the Shirley area. With the 28N closing in, a random AY-3 started to roll off of the east wye and into view. Slowly they crossed over from track 2 to track 1, before accelerating off on their way to Catania Spagna by CPF-WL. As soon as AY-3 disappeared around the corner, we heard 28N confirming with District 3 that they had no setoff in Ayer. With two honks of the horn, it was apparent that 28N was easing out of a stop at CPF-AY on the heels of AY-3. Making their appearance in the early-morning shadows, 28N slowly rolled through with NS 8105 showing off its unique K5HL. After the good-size 28N rolled through with 37 racks, another AY-Local rounded the corner off of the east wye to head off to clear the Camp track, successfully ending a very productive 20-minutes of railfanning as I headed off to my football game. 28N’s consist: NS 8105 (ES44AC), NS 6943 (SD60E) and 37 cars.
