Places I visited in Jaisalmer:
1. Jaisalmer Fort - Jaisalmer Fort, often called the "Golden Fort" or Sonar Qila, is a majestic sandstone fortress that rises from the Thar Desert and dominates the skyline of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Built in 1156 by Rajput ruler Rao Jaisal, it is one of the few "living forts" in the world, with nearly a quarter of the city’s population still residing within its walls. Made from yellow sandstone, the fort glows golden at sunset, blending seamlessly with the desert landscape. Inside, a labyrinth of narrow lanes is lined with centuries-old havelis, Jain temples with intricate carvings, and bustling marketplaces, all of which offer a glimpse into the region’s vibrant history and culture. The fort's architecture and enduring charm make it an unmissable part of Jaisalmer’s heritage.
2. Patwon Ki Haveli - Patwaon ki Haveli is a grand, intricately designed cluster of five havelis in Jaisalmer, known for its stunning architecture and fine craftsmanship. Built by a wealthy merchant named Guman Chand Patwa in the early 19th century, this haveli complex is famous for its delicate stone carvings, detailed balconies, and arched doorways, which showcase the artistic heritage of Rajasthan.
3. Bada Bagh - Also know as , Big Garden, it is a serene, historic complex of cenotaphs located on a hill near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Originally commissioned in the early 18th century by Maharawal Jait Singh, Bada Bagh serves as the royal burial site for the Maharajas of Jaisalmer. This captivating site is dotted with intricately carved chhatris (cenotaphs), each honoring a different ruler, and is surrounded by desert landscapes and a lush, now-dry garden.
4. Sam Sand Dunes - Sam Sand Dunes, located about 40 kilometers from Jaisalmer, are one of the most popular and scenic desert destinations in Rajasthan. Known for their sweeping golden dunes that stretch endlessly across the Thar Desert, Sam Sand Dunes offer visitors a quintessential desert experience. Here, you can enjoy camel safaris, jeep rides, and the chance to watch the sun cast a mesmerizing glow over the dunes at sunset. The evenings often come alive with traditional Rajasthani music and dance performances at nearby desert camps, where I spent the night under the stars, experiencing the local culture and hospitality.
5. Tanot Mata Mandir - Tanot Mata Mandir, located near the India-Pakistan border around 120 kilometers from Jaisalmer, is a revered temple dedicated to Goddess Tanot, an incarnation of Goddess Hinglaj. This temple holds a special place in the hearts of locals and soldiers, with stories of miraculous events during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Legend has it that despite heavy shelling, the bombs dropped near the temple did not explode, sparing the area and fortifying the temple's status as a symbol of divine protection. Today, the temple is maintained by the Border Security Force (BSF), and many pilgrims and tourists visit to seek blessings and witness the unique historical artifacts, including unexploded shells displayed in the temple museum.
6. The Longewala War Memorial - It is a poignant tribute to the heroic soldiers of the Indian Army who defended the Longewala post during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.With a small battalion of around 120 soldiers, the Indian Army successfully defended against a massive assault by the Pakistani forces, who had tanks and artillery support. The memorial showcases battle relics, including original tanks and military equipment, and features exhibits and a documentary recounting the battle, offering visitors a glimpse into the bravery, resilience, and strategic prowess that led to this decisive victory. The famous Bollywood movie "Border" is based on Longewala War.
