The Story of the Buddhist Flag:
The Buddhist Flag is the symbol of Faith and Peace
The flag's six vertical bands represent the five colours of the aura that emanated from the body of Buddha when he attained enlightenment
Blue represents: Loving kindness, peace and universal kindness
Yellow represents: The middle path – avoiding extremes, emptiness
Red represents: Blessing of practice- achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune and dignity
White represents - The Purity of Dharma- It leads to liberation, outside of time or space
Orange represents: The Buddha’s teaching, wisdom
The sixth vertical band, on the fly, is made up of a combination of the five other colours' rectangular bands which represents the Truth of the Buddha's teaching.
The flag was originally designed in 1885 by the Colombo Committee, in Colombo, Sri Lanka
The flag was first publicly hoisted on Vesak day, 28 May 1885 by Ven. Gunananda Thera.
At the 1950 World Fellowship of Buddhists, the flag was adopted as the International Buddhist Flag
