1. The Blues Foundation
In standard music, a "seventh" chord usually feels like a question that needs an answer. However, in styles like Blues, Jazz, and Funk, the I7 chord (E7) and the IV7 chord (A7) act as the foundation.

Instead of feeling like they are "waiting" to resolve, these chords create a specific "vibe" known as the Mixolydian sound. It is bluesy, slightly tense, but very stable.

E7 (The Home Chord): This is your starting point. It feels grounded but has more "grit" than a standard E Major chord.

A7 (The Departure): This provides a sense of movement. It feels like you are stepping away from home, but since it is also a seventh chord, it shares the same DNA as your starting point.

2. Smooth Transitions (Voice Leading)
The reason E7 and A7 flow together so perfectly is because of how the individual notes inside the chords move. They only have to move a tiny bit:

One note in E7 (G#) drops just a tiny bit to become a note in A7 (G).

Another note in E7 (D) drops just a tiny bit to become a note in A7 (C#).

This small, "sliding" movement is what makes the transition feel professional and "slippery" rather than jumpy or disconnected.

3. How to Play Over It
If you are soloing or improvising, you have two main choices for this specific E7 to A7 movement:

The Sweet Sound: Switch your scale as the chords change. Use the E Mixolydian scale for the E7, and the A Mixolydian scale for the A7.

The Gritty Sound: Use the E Minor Pentatonic or the E Blues scale across both chords. This is the secret to that classic rock and roll and blues sound.
