Dunlin bathing and preening on the bank of the River Thames at Higham Marshes, Kent, UK. Dunlin, Calidris alpina, is one of Europe's most common shorebirds but they are anything but mundane birds when seen at such close range, in good light while they are busy bathing and preening; great bird behaviour to see. At a distance Dunlin look like little grey birds but when seen like this their intricate plumage is revealed. In this flock of migrating Dunlin there is a wide range of plumages from first year plumage to full adult plumage. Bathing and preening these feathers keeps these Dunlin in good condition for continuing their migration.
