After an end-of-summer server clean-up session, we found this exclusive archive interview made by Gerhard Narholz on September 20th 1978, and we thought it was too iconic to stay private!

Xavier Cugat was a multi-talented composer, cartoonist, caricaturist, artist, actor & much more. He was the one who brought Latin Dance Music to the USA. Not many people know that he is the mind behind the composition of “La Cucaracha”, the popular Mexican folk song.

He fell in with the Latino crowd of the film industry, and his Hollywood connections helped his orchestra climb to the top of the entertainment industry. In fact, he composed albums with idols like Rita Hayworth, and legend has it that Cugat was Rudolph Valentino’s favorite player.
