The Columbus Division of Fire, Bomb Squad and military specialists from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base worked together to dispose of "outdated military-grade ammunition," late on Friday night at a facility in Knox County.

"The ammunition was discovered by a new property owner, who requested assistance to ensure it was handled safely," the Columbus Division of Fire stated in a release.

Working alongside Air Force personnel, city bomb technicians executed a controlled disposal of the cache shortly before midnight.

"Due to the urgent nature of the situation and the need to maintain public safety, advance public notification was not possible," the department said. "Out of an abundance of caution and to prioritize public safety, trained bomb squad technicians conducted a controlled disposal of the ammunition."

While the lack of notice may have caused concern for nearby residents, officials emphasized that the risk has been fully managed.
