In today's episode, I continue my look at the major events that helped to contribute to the dividing of America in the decades and years leading up to the start of the American Civil War. Today we look at the Nullification Crisis of 1831-1833, often just referred to the Nullification Crisis of 1832.

A tariff, on imported textiles, was a Northern creation designed to protect Northern business interest at the expense of Southern plantation owners. Vice-President John C. Calhoun became the outspoken representative for South Carolina's right to make null and void a federal law, if that law is deemed harmful to a state. As a result, a showdown occurred in the executive branch as states' rights Calhoun went head to head with President Andrew Jackson.
