About the Discussion
During his address to the nation on 19 November 2021F Indian Prime Minister Modi announced the decision to withdraw three controversial farm laws Legislated by his government last year. The Laws were supported by economists,policymakers, businesses and several other groups to bring major reforms in Indian agriculture. However, they generated great unrest among a section of farmers over alleged fears of India’s agricultural markets being corporatised and the system of minimum support prices being discontinued. The protests went on for several months Leading to a political stalemate between the farmers and the Modi government. The decision to repeal the Laws in the run-up to the
forthcoming elections in the major North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have raised questions over whether the repeal was due to political compulsions of assuaging the farmers. More importantly, however, the decision to withdraw the laws casts a shadow over the Modi government's ability to stay committed to the cause of long-term economic reforms and supportive policies.
