He Did it Anyway

Gathered round the table
No matter what their label
The disciples ate a meal with Jesus there

In the upper room where
they Met and shared their food
They drank the Wine and Jesus broke the bread

He gave it to them evenly
still knowing some would turn and leave
But he broke it anyway the night he was betrayed


Just as he broke the bread
He took a breath and hung his head
And even when I turned away
He did it anyway

Just as he drank that wine
The all sufficient sacrifice
Bearing all our shame
He did it anyway


He went to the garden
Now alone he started calling
To his father who could see all of his pain

He cried please take this cup from me
As he called to god so fervently
Saying abba father not my will by yours

Just as he broke the bread
He took a breath and hung his head
And even when I turned away
He did it anyway

Just as he drank that wine
The all-sufficient sacrifice
Bearing all our shame
He did it anyway

No the story doesn’t end in pain
No Jesus had the final say
For a death on the cross
Doesn’t mean that he lost

He rose again on that third day
Yes victory had the final say
And in the mess we’ve made
He did anyway
