The record also features the Violin Concerto, a 1980 work composed during the year of the composer's fiftieth birthday, which is already widely performed today. Here, it is performed by Maxim Vengerov, a 6th-grade student at the Novosibirsk Music School. The young virtuoso has ample opportunity to shine, as Petrov's music is both spectacular and multifaceted. Lyrical oases sit side-by-side with the Concerto's final episodes and their theatrically vivid character-masks, where the elemental spirit of streets and squares emerges through an effortless, light-hearted interplay. Yet even here, in the Concerto's lyrical pages, beautiful cantilena does not equate to repose (which is practically non-existent in Petrov’s work), and the ear easily detects the beating pulse of internal tension.

"I wanted to create a work that was not so much a virtuoso concerto as a poem for violin and orchestra." These words from the composer partly explain why melody literally reigns supreme here—that innermost soul of music which, "regardless of style or trend, remains one of its principal qualities." A world of kindness suffuses the music. This is as typical of Petrov as the fact that he remains true to his democratic principles: "No matter what I write, I always think about how it will be perceived by a mass audience, and I try to imagine myself in the role of the listener."
