Temple elephant processions are traditional religious parades in Kerala where beautifully adorned elephants participate in temple festivals, carrying deities and accompanied by music, rituals, and fireworks. This practice is deeply rooted in Kerala’s Hindu traditions, especially in Thrissur, Guruvayur, and Palakkad regions.

🐘 The Elephants

Elephants are considered sacred and royal in Kerala's temple culture.

The lead elephant carries the "thidambu" – a replica of the temple deity.

They are adorned with:

Nettipattam (gold-plated forehead ornament)

Aalavattam (peacock-feather fans)

Venchamaram (white yak-tail fans)

Colorful parasols (umbrellas) changed rhythmically during the procession

Traditional orchestras like:

Panchavadyam (5 instruments)

Chenda Melam (drum ensemble)
