United Earth Starfleet Command’s first extra-solar starbase was located in orbit of an M-class planet called "Salem" in the Berengaria system. The planet was located near several trade routes and had one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the sector.

In September 2155, Starbase 1, along with a contingent of civilian and Starfleet craft, was completely destroyed when the Romulan Navy attacked it without warning. Similar to the attack on Pearl Harbor nearly two centuries earlier, the ambush on Station Salem One became a rallying cry throughout the conflict.
