Planting onions and garlic in winter is gaining popularity, as it allows you to harvest a few weeks earlier than in spring. In addition, there are plenty of special winter varieties on the market that are ready to withstand the most severe frosts.
When to plant?
It is considered optimal to plant winter garlic about 35-45 days before the onset of stable frosts, so that it has time to grow the root system, but at the same time its green aboveground part should not hatch until spring. This is usually done at the end of October. For both onions and garlic, planting too early and too late is disastrous.
How to prepare the soil?
Garlic can be planted in the area where pumpkins, potatoes, cabbage, gourds, and melons are used to grow next to tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants. The bed should be sunny because garlic heads will not develop well without enough light. Garlic does not like acidic soils. If your site is acidic, the garlic bed should be deoxidized a few weeks before fertilizing.
All manipulations with garlic should be carried out immediately before planting:
disassemble the heads into cloves;
select the largest ones for planting, ruthlessly rejecting the weak and stale ones;
disinfect the teeth in saline (3 tbsp. l. per 5 liters of water, hold for two to three minutes);
Dip the planted garlic for a minute in a solution of copper sulfate (1 tsp per 10 liters of water).
How to plant?
Before winter, garlic is planted in grooves no deeper than 10 cm. The distance between them is 20-25 cm, and the distance between the cloves is about 15-10 cm, depending on the size of the planting material. After planting, the area should be mulched. A layer of 2 cm will be enough; you can use dry peat, dry grass, or wood shavings as mulch.
How to care in the spring?
When the frosts are gone and there are enough sunny days for the ground to warm up gradually, the mulch is removed from the garlic - usually not before April. But in March, you can cover the bed with agrofiber if it hasn't been mulched since the fall to speed up warming.
As soon as the first greens appear on the soil surface, the garlic needs to be fertilized. To do this, apply organic nitrogen fertilizers - a solution of bird droppings or fresh mullein. Young green shoots need to be covered with a new layer of mulch, which will help to get rid of periodic hoeing.
